Kerry Jonker is a professional athlete racing for the UCI Women’s Team Macogep Tornatech.
My whole life I have done a range of sports including lifesaving, basketball, skiing, netball, karate, tennis, and rowing to name a few. In September 2013 I began thinking that triathlon was a sport I might like to focus on, so began to pursue that at an elite level.
After a short but successful triathlon career, in 2017 I decided to focus on cycling as my single sport. In search for more race experience, I made the bold decision to head overseas to race the Belgian and Dutch professional kermesses for 3 weeks during my University break. I absolutely loved improving my racing ability and tactics, My best result was placing 10th against UCI professional women and I relished the opportunity to race the best female cyclists in the world, including the Olympic Champion Anna van der Breggen.
At the South African Road Nationals I placed 6th in the TimeTrial and 16th in the Road Race, after 80k off the front of the race. I was there to win, and would rather have gone all out and be caught, than to sit in the bunch.
The highlight of my Australian cycling career was my performance and results at the 2018 Australian National Championships. In the Time-Trial I placed 3rd in the U23 category and 12th overall.
Another big highlight of my career was my first European podium after less than two years of racing. I was pleased to initiate a break at the Kontich kermesse, which maintained over 1 minute lead for the remaining 70 kilometres in the race, leading to me placing 2nd and beating many established professionals.
In September 2018 I became the Australian National University Champion when I attacked in the road race with 18k to go and time trialed to the finish, winning solo by over 2 minutes.
Long term my aim is to be a professional cyclist and represent South Africa whilst inspiring future generations in the sport. Having just completed my Bachelor of Electrical Engineering(Hons)at RMIT University, this is now a goal I can work full time towards.
